Usually the first place it would look would be your protein levels. It would then steal the protein to burn, leaving your muscles with nothing to feed off for their growth and regeneration. Weight gainer is taken to supply the body with enough of its own energy without it having to touch your muscle's protein.
However, even though weight gainer is a good supplement in itself for people who want to gain weight, the sort of energy you get from it doesn't benefit your muscles. It targets your body as a whole, whereas protein concentrates directly on your muscles. If you're looking to bulk your muscles up, to build your body, then whey protein powder is the way to go.
